Calculate percentages quickly and accurately.
A percentage is a way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100. The word comes from the Latin "per centum," meaning "by the hundred." Percentages are used everywhere in daily life — from calculating discounts while shopping, to understanding interest rates on loans, to reading statistics in the news.
To find what percentage one number is of another, divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. For example, if you scored 45 out of 60 on a test, your percentage score is (45 ÷ 60) × 100 = 75%.
Multiply the number by 0.20. For example, 20% of 250 = 250 × 0.20 = 50.
Subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original value, then multiply by 100. Example: from 80 to 100 = ((100 - 80) ÷ 80) × 100 = 25% increase.
A percentage is a ratio out of 100. A percentile is a value below which a certain percentage of data falls — commonly used in test scores and statistics.
