Calculate your General Weighted Average (GWA) using the Philippine university grading system. Add as many subjects as you need — supports multiple semesters.
| Subject | Units | Grade | Status | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Distinction | GWA Range |
|---|---|
| Summa Cum Laude | 1.00 – 1.20 |
| Magna Cum Laude | 1.21 – 1.45 |
| Cum Laude | 1.46 – 1.75 |
| Passed | 1.76 – 3.00 |
| Failed | Above 3.00 |
GWA stands for General Weighted Average — the official academic performance measure used in Philippine colleges and universities. Unlike a simple average, GWA weights each subject's grade by the number of units it carries. A 3-unit subject has three times more impact on your GWA than a 1-unit subject.
The formula is: GWA = Sum of (Grade × Units) ÷ Total Units. For every subject, multiply the grade by its unit value, sum all these products, then divide by the total number of units enrolled. Only subjects with letter grades count — INC (Incomplete) and DRP (Dropped) subjects are typically excluded.
| Grade | Description | % Equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| 1.00 | Excellent | 97–100% |
| 1.25 | Excellent | 94–96% |
| 1.50 | Very Good | 91–93% |
| 1.75 | Very Good | 88–90% |
| 2.00 | Good | 85–87% |
| 2.25 | Good | 82–84% |
| 2.50 | Satisfactory | 79–81% |
| 2.75 | Satisfactory | 76–78% |
| 3.00 | Passed | 75% |
| 5.00 | Failed | Below 75% |
An INC (Incomplete) grade is typically not counted in the GWA computation until it is resolved — either replaced with a final grade or converted to a 5.0 (failed) if not completed within the allowed period (usually one year). Check your university's specific policy on INC resolution.
Latin Honors are awarded based on cumulative GWA at graduation. Most Philippine universities use the 1.0–5.0 scale cutoffs: Summa Cum Laude (1.00–1.20), Magna Cum Laude (1.21–1.45), and Cum Laude (1.46–1.75). Some universities like UP have different cutoffs — always verify with your registrar.
GWA (General Weighted Average) is the Philippine term for what American universities call GPA (Grade Point Average). Both measure academic performance by weighting grades by credit hours/units. The key difference is the scale: Philippine universities use 1.0–5.0 (where 1.0 is the highest), while American universities typically use 0.0–4.0 (where 4.0 is highest).
This varies by university. Most Philippine universities include PE (Physical Education) and NSTP (National Service Training Program) in the GWA computation since they carry units. However, some universities exclude non-academic subjects from Latin Honors computation. Verify with your specific university's academic policies.
