GWA Calculator — Philippines

Calculate your General Weighted Average (GWA) using the Philippine university grading system. Add as many subjects as you need — supports multiple semesters.

Subject Units Grade Status
Grade reference: 1.00 = Excellent · 1.25–1.75 = Very Good · 2.00–2.75 = Good · 3.00 = Passed · 5.00 = Failed · INC = Incomplete

How to use

  • Choose your grading system
Select the 1.0–5.0 scale (most PH universities), percentage, or 4.0 scale.
  • Add your subjects
Click "+ Add Subject" for each subject. Enter the subject name, number of units, and your grade.
  • Multiple semesters
Click "+ Add Semester" to add 2nd semester, summer, etc. Your cumulative GWA is calculated across all semesters.
  • Calculate
Hit Calculate GWA to see your weighted average, total units, Latin honors status, and per-semester breakdown.

Latin Honors (1.0–5.0 Scale)

DistinctionGWA Range
Summa Cum Laude1.00 – 1.20
Magna Cum Laude1.21 – 1.45
Cum Laude1.46 – 1.75
Passed1.76 – 3.00
FailedAbove 3.00
Note: Honors cutoffs vary by university. UP uses 1.45/1.75/2.00.

GWA Formula

GWA = Σ(Grade × Units) ÷ Σ(Units)

Example:
Math: 1.5 × 3 = 4.5
English: 2.0 × 3 = 6.0
PE: 1.0 × 2 = 2.0
GWA = 12.5 ÷ 8 = 1.5625

What is GWA?

GWA stands for General Weighted Average — the official academic performance measure used in Philippine colleges and universities. Unlike a simple average, GWA weights each subject's grade by the number of units it carries. A 3-unit subject has three times more impact on your GWA than a 1-unit subject.

How GWA is Calculated

The formula is: GWA = Sum of (Grade × Units) ÷ Total Units. For every subject, multiply the grade by its unit value, sum all these products, then divide by the total number of units enrolled. Only subjects with letter grades count — INC (Incomplete) and DRP (Dropped) subjects are typically excluded.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does INC affect my GWA?

An INC (Incomplete) grade is typically not counted in the GWA computation until it is resolved — either replaced with a final grade or converted to a 5.0 (failed) if not completed within the allowed period (usually one year). Check your university's specific policy on INC resolution.

How is Latin Honors determined?

Latin Honors are awarded based on cumulative GWA at graduation. Most Philippine universities use the 1.0–5.0 scale cutoffs: Summa Cum Laude (1.00–1.20), Magna Cum Laude (1.21–1.45), and Cum Laude (1.46–1.75). Some universities like UP have different cutoffs — always verify with your registrar.

What is the difference between GWA and GPA?

GWA (General Weighted Average) is the Philippine term for what American universities call GPA (Grade Point Average). Both measure academic performance by weighting grades by credit hours/units. The key difference is the scale: Philippine universities use 1.0–5.0 (where 1.0 is the highest), while American universities typically use 0.0–4.0 (where 4.0 is highest).

Are PE and NSTP subjects included in GWA?

This varies by university. Most Philippine universities include PE (Physical Education) and NSTP (National Service Training Program) in the GWA computation since they carry units. However, some universities exclude non-academic subjects from Latin Honors computation. Verify with your specific university's academic policies.
